The SV provided for Piccadilly Basin (Fig.44) was chosen as it provided movement from the Ancoats development and entered the site via the existing main access point on Dale Street. The SV then moved through the site to exit via the secondary arrival/access point on Hilton Street to the north. The route map was also used to ensure that the reader is aware of the myriad of listed structures around the site and 3D mapping was used to best illustrate the vacant nature of the existing location. In the associated sketches the site is always coloured to ensure clarity. What the SV tells the designer is that the movement around the site is defined by good enclosure, provided by 3:1 street ratios. Yet the site breaks this historic street setting. Figure 45, sketch 4 also indicates that the canal is attractive in places with some existing green infrastructure and seating.

Extra look: Cullen argued that the urban experience should be one of delight, and this could be achieved by interest being stimulated through contrasts. These contrasts and emerging different views are often achieved successfully in medieval cities such as York, England. Through a series of curving streets, pocket public spaces, and visible landmarks the city is evidently walkable and offers users a consistently complex, attractive, and changing environment as they move through it.
